Port of Alaska Expansion Project

failed

The Port of Alaska Intermodal Expansion Project was an ambitious modernization effort launched in the early 2000s to expand and modernize the Port of Alaska. The project encountered significant engineering and construction failures that left much of the work unusable and resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in additional costs. The federal government and the Municipality of Anchorage were involved in a decade-long lawsuit over the project's failures, which was settled in 2026 with the federal government agreeing to pay $180 million to the municipality.
