Description
Description | The Port of Durres was a port operated by the government of Albania. The GoA awarded a 35-year concession on the container terminal to a joint venture of Turkey’s Kurum and Malta’s Mariner. Kurum committed to investing $30.5 million (22.8 million euro) in port facilities. The Port of Durres volumes were 3.5 million tons in 2013, and 83,000 TEU, attracting 90 percent of all national seaborne trade. In total, 21 percent of the proceeds from the concession were earmarked go to the port, 2.0 percent for the Albanian state, while the concessionaire was to receive the remaining 77 percent. Steel maker Kurum (Turkey) was one of the biggest foreign investors in Albania. Malta-based Mariner was an investor, developer, and independent operator of sea terminals. Its share in the JV was 48 percent. Kurum was awarded the concession (partly) as compensation of the expropriation of Durres shipyard, acquired in 2003. Add sponsor: Malta's Mariner |
