Description

Description

Cia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN), Brazil's largest steel mill, has paid US$ 37 million for the right to build and lease a coal-import terminal at Sepetiba port in southern Rio de Janeiro state. CSN signed the 25-year leasing agreement with the Rio de Janeiro Port Authority, renewable for 25 years, and promised to invest $15 million to build a coal terminal capable of handling 3.4 million metric tons of imported coal annually. Brazilian steel mills import 11 million to 12 million tons of metallurgical coal per year. Brazil's integrated steelmaker, Cia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN), has announced it will operate the coal import terminal at Sepetiba for the next 25 years, with an option to extend that for a further 25 year period. Currently the terminal receives 3mt/yr of imported coal and coke for CSN and 2mt/yr for other Brazilian steel producers. From 1997 to 2003, CSN invested US$ 28 million in maintainance and construction works at the terminal - US$ 13 million more than the initial estimated investment. In 2008, CSN started investing in the modernization of the facility with investment commitments of US$ 790 million. The terminal capacity was expected to increase from 2 to 6 million tons per year.
