The Port Development Project for Israel will construct a new port in the city of Ashdod. Traffic has increased greatly over the years through Israel's major ports of Haifa and Eliat. As a result, these ports have become burdened with high levels of traffic. The new port in Ashdod will alleviate heavy traffic and increase the efficiency of Israel's port system. The project components are: 1) construction of breakwaters; 2) dredging within the port area to proper depths for deep-sea ships; 3) building wharves of a length to accommodate five deep sea ships at once; 4) creating track and roadway within the port area, and rail links outside it to a construction quarry; 5) procurement of several transit sheds for citrus fruit and general cargo plus some paved open storage areas; 6)acquisition of port utilities and auxiliary structures and; 7) procurement of some harbor craft, cranes and mobile loading equipment. The development of a new port at Ashdod will improve the efficiency and productivity of Israel's port system.
