SNO-PT 2 will enable the expansion of SNOMED CT coverage in Portugal, by renewing and expanding the use of the international SNOMED CT terminology within the national healthcare system. This project will enable Portugal not only to maintain, but also to expand the application of SNOMED CT in the codification of clinical terms in healthcare systems, extending this practice to a broader national level. By adopting this terminology, SNO-PT 2 seeks to reinforce Portugal’s commitment to semantic interoperability in healthcare information management, positively impacting national systems and also significantly contributing to the European Health Data Space (EHDS). This not only facilitates the exchange of information between health systems, improving cross-border care, but also allows EU citizens to have their health data accessible in all Member State languages, promoting more effective communication and more personalized healthcare. Furthermore, the benefits extend beyond the primary use of health data. The semantic interoperability provided by SNOMED CT also drives significant advances in the field of medical research, innovation, health policy formulation and regulatory activities (secondary use). Therefore, SNO-PT 2 not only promotes efficiency and quality in the provision of healthcare, but also contributes to increasing the quality of data available for secondary use, strengthening the knowledge base for scientific investigations, and driving advances in medicine and public health. By consolidating its leading position in the primary and secondary uses of health data, Portugal is positioning itself as an important contributor to the advancement of digital health in the European Union. Building on previous projects like SNO-PT and on the establishment of the National release centre in 2014, SNO-PT 2 not only elevates healthcare standards, but also fosters cross-border cooperation and boosts medical research and innovation.
