Description | The Potomac Interceptor, a 72-inch diameter sewage line carrying 60 million gallons of wastewater daily from Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., collapsed on January 19, 2026, causing a massive sewage overflow into the Potomac River. DC Water has implemented a bypass system to divert sewage around the broken pipe and is nearing completion of an enhanced bypass system to begin emergency repairs. Emergency repairs are expected to be completed in four to six weeks, with full repairs taking six to nine months. DC Water is also inspecting 20 areas along the pipe and plans to continue repairs throughout the year. |
