Description | The Potter Valley Project, a century-old hydropower complex in Mendocino County, California, is being decommissioned. PG&E filed to surrender its federal license, and two dams, Scott Dam and Cape Horn Dam, are set to be removed. The Eel River water rights will be transferred to the Round Valley Indian Tribes. A new smaller diversion facility, the New Eel-Russian Facility (NERF), will take water during high-flow periods only. The powerhouse has not operated since June 2021 due to transformer failure, and PG&E will not replace it. The project is undergoing a transition with local stakeholders involved in the water rights and ecological protections. |
