Description
Description | A water conveyance tunnel project initiated in 2012 to construct a 6.6-kilometer tunnel from Veravali to Ghatkopar in Mumbai. A German-made Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was used to excavate a 4.4-kilometer stretch from Powai towards Ghatkopar. The TBM became trapped in unstable volcanic ash after boring 1.2 kilometers, leading to abandonment of the original tunnel and TBM. A new tender was floated in 2022 to complete the remaining stretch using a combination of TBM and New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The project is nearing completion with expected finish by March 2027. |
