Description | The Kariba Hydroelectric Project in Rhodesia and Nyasaland will provide a generating capacity of 500 mw with a yearly capability of 3,500 to 4,000 million kw. It will be developed in two stages: a) to reach a capacity of 500 mw, and (b) a capability of 4 billion kw per year. The complete development will have a capacity of 1,200 mw with a firm ability of 8 billion kw per year. A nationwide grid will be built as a part of the project, and will interconnect the major load centers in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. It is confronted with the problem of quickly developing large amounts of power to meet a rapidly increasing demand. This requirement results from the continued expansion of the rapid pace of over all economic development. |
