The Fourth Power Project for El Salvador will assist in financing the expansion of CEL's power facilities. CEL or Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa, is a government corporation that was created in 1945 to plan and provide electric power supplies to meet the country's requirements. During the last few years, the demand for power has increased greatly in El Salvador. As a result, the CEL must generate more power to supply its consumers. The project will accomplish this goal by: 1) adding a 15,000 to 18,000 kw hydroelectric generating unit and substation facilities in the existing Guayabo plant on the Rio Lempa; 2) constructing a 25,000 kw steam electric generating plant with oil storage facilities and a step-up substation at the port city of Acajutla; 3) constructing a 115 kv transmission line from Acajutla to Opico; and 4) expanding substation facilities. These improvements will help to generate more power to meet the growing demand in El Salvador.
