Description
Description | The project aims to improve the electricity supply in north-west Tanzania and to create the conditions for a connection to regional electricity grids and generation capacities in north-west Tanzania (measure objective). The measure contributes directly to the development cooperation program objective of improving the energy supply based increasingly on renewable energies, energy efficiency and integration into regional electricity markets. The development policy benefit of the project is high 1) The expansion of the line infrastructure is a prerequisite for the medium to long-term planned connection to regional electricity markets and generation capacities in the north-west (Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda) and in the south (Mbeya), which will lead to greater security of supply and grid stability. It is therefore a crucial link in the creation of an electricity market in the Great Lakes region. Interstate electricity trading helps to meet demand in the countries around Lake Victoria and at the same time in the entire East African region (EAPP) in the medium and long term. An important aspect is the planned connection of the Rusumo Falls hydroelectric power station and, in the future, other hydroelectric power stations (e.g. Kakono) to the national power grid, which will be made possible by the section of the route. Electricity from these power stations can be fed into the national power grid via the transmission line at least cost prices and can thus be used to supply the region beyond. 2) The transmission line is a further expansion stage of the national grid and forms the basis for the efficient power supply of the western part of the Mwanza region and the Kagera region, which is not yet connected to the national grid. The FC measure creates the conditions for access to efficient energy and has positive effects for the entire region (poor private households, small businesses and large consumers) and is a key condition for improved economic conditions and structural change. Commercial users benefit from cheaper electricity with a greatly improved supply situation and grid stability, which enables the economic potential of north-west Tanzania to be exploited and stimulates growth in the region. Social development is promoted by supplying social facilities and households in rural areas. 3) The planned transmission line will make it possible to replace existing diesel and heavy oil power plants in the long term, reduce the need for backup generators and deliveries of diesel by truck from Dar es Salaam to northwest Tanzania and thus achieve positive CO2 effects. |
