The project Power supply for host communities and Syrian refugees, Zaatari Camp is part of the special initiative Combating the causes of flight - reintegrating refugees (VE 2015). It aims to improve the supply in Jordan's largest refugee camp and to ensure grid stability in the area. The project includes the construction of a solar photovoltaic system of around 12 MW on the site of the Zaatari refugee camp, financed from an FZ grant of EUR 15 million and an own contribution of around EUR 1.5 million. The sponsor is the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), which is implementing the project in close cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. The development policy goal of the measure is to help secure the power supply in the Zaatari refugee camp for around 80,000 people. At the same time, it helps to reduce the overload of the electricity grid in northern Jordan due to the increased demand resulting from the influx of refugees, thus preventing negative effects on the electricity supply of the indigenous Jordanian population. This also contributes to reducing the potential for conflict between the host population and the Syrian refugees in Jordan. Overall, the project fits into the goal of developing a more ecologically sustainable, less import-dependent energy supply for Jordan. The project complements the German government's support for refugees and host communities in northern Jordan in the transition from emergency aid to resilience-building measures.
