Description | The Lunersee Hydroelectric Power Project in Austria will produce winter peak power from pumped storage. It will consist of the construction of a small dam across the lower end of Luner Lake (Lunersee) to increase its storage capacity, the diversion of the run-off of a glacier into the lake, and the construction of 9.7 kilometers of tunnels, siphons, and penstocks to convey water from the lake to a new power-house in which five generating and five pumping units will be installed. The Austrian benefits will include: additional power facilities with which to satisfy the demands in Vorarlberg and Tirol, and the benefits to the German power will include: the availability of 127,000 kw of additional power for use at periods of peak demand at a cost of about 17 per kilowatt-year (a very cheap cost) and the sale of some of their off peak energy to the project for pumping. |
