Description | The Powerline Inspection Robot is a homegrown robot developed to inspect power lines and prevent faults that cause power outages. It moves along live power lines using wheels, cameras, and sensors to detect damage before it becomes a problem. The robot can climb towers, withstand harsh weather, and uses smart machine vision to detect obstacles. It was initially a student project at UKZN and is now patented in South Africa and the US. Eskom and the KwaZulu-Natal government funded the project, and it is being developed for commercial use through UKZN's InQubate programme. |
