Description | The PowerOn Midwest project is a proposed 765-kilovolt transmission line running from South Dakota to the Rochester area in southern Minnesota. It aims to address increased electric growth, retirement of old power plants, and increased use of renewable energy sources to ensure reliable energy supply in the Midwest. The project involves a partnership of Xcel Energy, Great River Energy, ITC Midwest, and Otter Tail Power. The transmission line will have taller and wider towers than previous projects and will require a right-of-way about 250 feet across. The project is in the planning and approval stage, with a certificate of need application planned for February 2026 and potential construction start as early as 2030. |
