Description
Description | Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is a Government of Nunavut (GN) territorial corporation, the sole provider of electricity throughout Nunavut. QEC owns and operates a stand-alone diesel power plants in each of 25 communities across Nunavut, of which 11 are operating beyond their intended life span. QEC is mandated to undertake capital projects to replace aging critical infrastructure needed to provide safe, reliable power to Nunavummiut. This application proposes to replace the diesel powered plants in Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, and Igloolik, and to replace a diesel generator set in Iqaluit to improve energy efficiency and reliability. Cambridge Bay (To be updated): The existing 4.95 MW diesel power plant built in 1958 has exceeded its design life and its outdated equipment and building structure reduces the operational reliability and efficiency. This project proposes to replace the plant with a more energy efficient 5.5 MW diesel powered plant consisting of 5 diesel generators. Gjoa Haven: The existing 2.32 MW diesel power plant built in 1977 has exceeded its design life and its outdated equipment and building structure reduces the operational reliability and efficiency. This project proposes to replace the plant with a more energy efficient 3.1 MW diesel powered plant consisting of 4 diesel generators. Igloolik: The existing 2.37 MW diesel power plant built in 1974 has exceeded its design life and its outdated equipment and building structure reduces the operational reliability and efficiency. This project proposes to replace the plant with a more energy efficient 3.45 MW diesel powered plant consisting of 4 diesel generators. Iqaluit: The existing 3.3 MW diesel generator set (Genset) at the Iqaluit power plant has reached end of life and is not reliable due to frequent overhaul requirements. This project proposes to improve power reliability and stability of the existing plant by installing a new 3.3 MW diesel Genset. |
