Princeton - Well #4 Upgrades for Climate Change
Sector: Water Supply and Storage • Location: British Columbia, Canada
Source: Infrastructure Canada
Project includes the existing well building being demolished and rebuilt outside of the floodplain, including a new treatment building/pump house, new interconnected piping, and a new well. Project also includes riverbank armouring. During the Atmospheric River of 2021 the river lost 10m of riverbank. This project will shape the bank and place geo textile, level with sand, and add class 250 riprap

Description
Description | Project includes the existing well building being demolished and rebuilt outside of the floodplain, including a new treatment building/pump house, new interconnected piping, and a new well. Project also includes riverbank armouring. During the Atmospheric River of 2021 the river lost 10m of riverbank. This project will shape the bank and place geo textile, level with sand, and add class 250 riprap armouring to protect the well site. This project has been proposed with the following objectives: - Drilling new domestic production supply Well #4 at Tulameen site. - Abandon existing Tulameen Well #4 pumphouse, which is in the updated 200-year (plus climate change) floodplain. - Construct a water treatment building which provides adequate chlorine contact time and a UV disinfection system outside the 200-year (plus climate change) floodplain. - Further to the above, address the designation of the water source being considered Groundwater at Risk of Containing Pathogens (GARP) and provide the residents of Princeton with a reliable and safe water supply fully complying with IHA standards. - Upgrade the water supply infrastructure necessary to support economic growth within the community. Project works are proposed to include: - All water system infrastructure (other than the groundwater supply wells) relocated from the preliminary 200-year (plus climate change) flood level. - Surface seal installed on the proposed well. Since the groundwater supply wells would be below the flood level, this portion of the water system would be shut down in advance of a flood event. Groundwater quality monitoring would then be required following a flood event to ensure that adequate water quality is achieved. - A water treatment building installed adjacent to the Westridge Reservoir. Water treatment building to include UV disinfection units sized for a design flow rate of 1,200 USgpm. Raw water to be conveyed from the groundwater wells through these UV disinfection units to a below-grade chlorine contact chamber. - High lift pumps in the water treatment building to convey flow to the 770 pressure zone. An interconnection would also be included between the proposed chlorine contact chamber and the existing reservoir. - Erosion control measures would be included over all proposed watermains located under the 200-year (plus climate change) elevation. |
