Prismanet, formerly Syarikat Telefon Wireless (STW), was awarded a 20-year license to operate a fixed cellular network in December 1994. The company was created as a joint venture between Celcom (40%), US International Wireless Communication (30%), and local partners. The company invested US$600 million into the network for the supply of an analog cellular network. Although the company used AMPS standard, it had a license for fixed network and used WLL technology. Unusually for a new cellular network, the system was to be primarily analog, but was to employ the Digital American Mobile Phone System (D-AMPS) network technology to run in parallel with the standard AMPS network. The use of digital hybrid technology mirrored that seen in the United States at the time. Ericsson was the main equipment supplier for Syarikat Telefon Wireless Communications. The company had 20,000 subscribers by the end of 1997. By 2001, Prismanet Sdn Bhd found itself unable to get off the ground beyond a couple of radio base stations on Langkawi.
