Description

Description

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to privatise solid waste collection in the Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar zones due to complaints of open dumping, poor garbage handling, and irregular waste collection. This move will result in 14 of 15 zones in Chennai being managed by private contractors, with Ambattur as the only exception. Contractors will be selected through tenders and evaluated on 43 parameters including door-to-door collection, street sweeping, waste transportation, cleaning of hotspots, canals, riverbanks, and special areas. The city generates around 1,784 tonnes of waste daily from these two zones, expected to rise to 2,000 tonnes by 2032. The contractor will also conduct public awareness campaigns on waste segregation and bio-waste processing. GCC will pay 50% of the project cost upfront and the remaining 50% based on performance, aiming to reduce waste management expenses by 20%-30%.
