Description

Description

This project focuses on Phase II of the African Program for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC). The program will contribute to the reduction of onchocerciasis morbidity in endemic countries. It responds to the Bank's vision of poverty reduction and is consistent with the Bank's health and environmental policies. The success of Phase I prompted the international community to commit to continuing the fight against the disease in the 19 endemic African countries. Phase II of APOC will establish sustainable onchocerciasis control operations in African countries where the disease is still a major public health problem and an obstacle to socio-economic development. It comprises the following four components: (i) Ivermectin treatment under the Community Directive; (ii) Point elimination of the vector; (iii) Research and evaluation and (iv) Program Management. The total cost of this program, which will be implemented over a period of 9 years, is estimated at UA 85.00 million.
