Description
Description | Project Acacia is a multi-year research effort by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC) exploring how digital money can improve wholesale asset markets in Australia. The project tested 20 wholesale tokenisation use cases across multiple distributed ledger platforms including Hedera, XRP Ledger, Ethereum, Redbelly, and Canvas Connect. It included a pilot issuance of wholesale central bank digital currency (wCBDC) totaling $4.4 million across eight use cases, with transactions up to $250,000. The pilot demonstrated atomic settlement, tokenized government bonds, stablecoins, and deposit tokens, involving major Australian banks and technology partners. The RBA plans follow-on work including a regulatory sandbox, tokenized government bond initiative, and infrastructure upgrades. |
