Description
Description | Project Cheetah is a wildlife conservation initiative launched by the Indian government to reintroduce cheetahs to India, a species declared extinct in the country in 1952. The project involves importing African cheetahs and releasing them into carefully monitored enclosures before transitioning them into the wild. It aims to restore ecological balance and showcase India's conservation leadership. The project began in September 2022 with the arrival of eight cheetahs from Namibia to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. However, the project has faced criticism regarding habitat readiness, survival rates, and ecological necessity, with concerns about the suitability of Kuno National Park for cheetahs and the project's focus on imported wildlife over native endangered species. |
