Project ELECTRO is an EU-funded initiative aimed at developing electrified thermochemical processes to transform mixed and hard-to-recycle waste, including multi-layer packaging and contaminated plastics, into high-purity olefins such as ethylene and propylene. The project targets up to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable electricity instead of fossil-based energy, aligning with the EU's circularity and decarbonization agenda. Borealis contributes by evaluating pyrolysis oil, optimizing circular hydrocarbon mixtures, developing cracking strategies, and improving process performance through prefractionation and advanced filtration. The project also integrates waste collected through Project STOP for research on chemical recycling of low-value waste streams.
