Project Electro is an EU-funded initiative to demonstrate the use of renewable energy to power catalytic pyrolysis. The project involves a multidisciplinary consortium of 12 partners from seven European countries. It combines a modular extruder for pre-treatment of plastic waste with an electrically heated reactor for catalytic pyrolysis, with a plant capacity of 50,000 tons per year. The project prioritizes plastic waste streams currently incinerated or dumped in landfills, sourcing feedstock from Indonesia and South Korea. The pyrolysis oil produced will be used as feedstock for steam crackers producing PE and PP. The project employs the RotoDynamic Reactor technology developed by Coolbrook to electrify steam cracking, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to current technologies.
