Project Him Sarovar

Project Him Sarovar is an initiative launched by the Ladakh administration to ensure year-round water security in the high-altitude cold desert region. The project involves engineering a series of 50 gravity-based storage ponds along the slopes of Ladakh's mountains to collect melting snow and glacial water. These ponds, measuring 40 m long, 30 m wide, and 2-3 m deep, will support irrigation and rural water needs. The project also aims to develop a local model for climate-resilient water management, boost local livelihoods, and promote agriculture including cultivation of Ladakhi apricot, seabuckthorn, and apples. Additional plans include plantation drives, development of winter sports and ice-skating facilities, and creating recreational spaces near the water bodies.
