Description

Description

Amazon's Project Houdini aims to accelerate AWS data center builds by modularizing the main server rooms into large, preassembled modules built in factories. This approach reduces on-site labor hours and speeds up deployment, cutting months off construction timelines. The project involves prebuilding large sections of the data hall, known as 'skids,' with racks, power distribution, cabling, lighting, and fire and security systems already installed, allowing server installation within two to three weeks of construction start, down from about 15 weeks traditionally. Amazon is working with Cupertino Electric Inc. and other vendors to prototype and scale the project, with initial module production planned in Topeka, Kansas; Houston; and Salt Lake City. The project is designed to support a buildout pipeline of more than 100 data centers a year.
