Description | Project ICECHIP is a first-of-its-kind scientific research project involving about 60 researchers chasing hail across the Great Plains to better forecast hailstorms, which cause about $10 billion a year in damage in the U.S. The project includes deploying fortified vehicles into hailstorms, launching weather balloons, and using high-tech equipment like radar and drones to collect data on hail size, strength, and storm dynamics. The study is funded in part by $11 million from the National Science Foundation and aims to improve hail forecasts and test new types of hail-resistant roofing materials. |
