Project Obsidian
Sector: Geothermal • Location: Oregon, USA
Source: Construction Review
Project Obsidian is the world’s first superhot geothermal power plant being developed on federal geothermal leases within Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest. It aims to generate 50 MW of always-on electricity initially, with potential expansion to 250 MW and long-term gigawatt-scale development. The project uses a proprietary millimeter-wave drilling technology to access superhot geothermal energy

Description
Description | Project Obsidian is the world’s first superhot geothermal power plant being developed on federal geothermal leases within Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest. It aims to generate 50 MW of always-on electricity initially, with potential expansion to 250 MW and long-term gigawatt-scale development. The project uses a proprietary millimeter-wave drilling technology to access superhot geothermal energy at depths where rock temperatures reach 300-500 degrees Celsius. Construction is underway with commercial operation targeted by 2030. |
