Description | Project Obsidian is a first-of-its-kind 'superhot' geothermal power plant being developed by Quaise Energy. It aims to deliver 24/7 electricity and compete on cost with fossil fuels by pioneering new drilling technology that allows drilling much deeper underground to access hotter rocks, producing 5 to 10 times more energy than typical geothermal wells. The project is located near the Newberry Volcano in a forest south of Bend, Oregon, and will start with conventional drilling before using advanced technology to drill deeper. The first phase will have a capacity of 50 megawatts, followed by an additional 200 megawatts at greater depth. |
