Project One Ethane Cracker

Project One is an ethane cracker currently under construction in Antwerp, Belgium. It represents the largest investment in the European chemical sector in over 25 years and will produce ethylene, a key chemical building block for industries such as packaging, automotive, building materials, and medical devices. The project aims to be one of the most energy-efficient and raw materials efficient olefin complexes in Europe, with carbon emissions less than half those of even the most efficient existing plants. However, it faces a lawsuit from NGOs and community groups citing alarming plastic, emission, and health risks, including concerns about Scope 3 emissions from upstream fracking in the US and downstream plastic waste incineration.
