Description

Description

Core problem The influx of Rohingya refugees in the Bangladeshi district of Coxs Bazar has increased the pressure on the already inadequate local government service structure and infrastructure. The level of supply and access options are inadequate. The additional strain on the infrastructure is also leading to growing tensions between the refugee and host communities. Furthermore, the affected region is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events. A lack of protective infrastructure in the event of a disaster exacerbates the danger situation for the local population. Module objective In the district of Coxs Bazar, which is affected by the Rohingya displacement crisis, access to climate-resilient infrastructure is to be improved and disaster resilience is to be strengthened, as is the social resilience of the population. Key outputs Access to climate-resilient multi-purpose disaster shelters in the district of Coxs Bazar has been improved. In concrete terms, this means the construction of 10 new cyclone shelters and up to 9.8 km of access roads that can be used all year round. Target group The target group of the FC module is the population of host communities living in the catchment area of the planned protective structures (approx. 20,000 people). Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 The project is designed in line with Bangladesh's national priorities for implementing the SDGs. The 39 nationally defined indicators (National Priority Indicators, NPI) complement the global SDG indicators from a national perspective. Through its focus on the provision of basic services and adaptation to the consequences of climate change, the project makes a significant contribution to SDG 1 (no poverty, especially 1.5 exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events), SDG 4 (quality education/NPI 12), SDG 9 (innovation and infrastructure/NPI 24), and SDG 13 (climate protection/NPI 32).
