Description
Description | Despite economic success with an average growth of 5% over the last decade and a good demographic starting position, Kenya is characterized by high youth unemployment (17% to 40%) and a simultaneous shortage of skilled workers. The creation of high-quality vocational training opportunities for Kenyan young people is therefore central to increasing the employment of young people in Kenya and improving the supply of qualified specialists. Against this background, the promotion of vocational training, especially in Africa, is a key concern for the German federal government. Therefore, at the beginning of 2017, the BMZ initiated the Kenyan-German TVET Initiative (KGTI) to promote youth employment in Kenya. The FC measure presented here is the core of this initiative. The project is the continuation of the first phase of the project Promoting Youth Employment and Vocational Training in Kenya (BMZ No. 2016 67 211). The project involves the establishment of Centres of Excellence for Cooperative Vocational Education (CoE) at selected public vocational schools in Kenya, which offer high-quality, labour market-oriented training for Kenyan youth in specific occupational fields with strong participation from local industries. The aim of the project is for Kenyan youth to successfully complete qualified labour market-oriented vocational training at the newly established CoEs. This will help to increase employability in Kenya. The total cost of this FC module is around EUR 13 million. An FC contribution (IDA loan of EUR 12 million) is planned to finance these costs and is part of the stock audit totalling EUR 50 million. |
