Promoting vocational training

A lack of income and employment prospects is a major challenge in the MENA region. This is also the case in Jordan, with an official youth unemployment rate of 45% (3rd quarter 2023). This is due to cultural values and the predominantly poor quality of training at vocational schools. Young, employable people have fewer opportunities for economic participation and employment, while the private sector suffers from a shortage of qualified workers. The aim of the FC measure is to increase the attractiveness of vocational training and thus contribute to a rethinking process among Jordan's young population, where academic training has previously been considered the desired training path. The partners of the FC project are the technical university founded by the Crown Prince (Al Hussein Technical University, HTU) and the College of Advanced Vocational Training (CAVT) as the implementation arm. As part of a FC-funded downscaling approach, CAVT is integrating two existing vocational schools in Irbid and establishing its own vocational school in Amman (CAVT Campus). The project aims to increase the attractiveness of vocational training by having a sister organization of the renowned HTU offer non-academic vocational training, creating permeability that allows students to start a bachelor's degree at the HTU after successfully completing various levels of vocational training, even without a Jordanian high school diploma, and ensuring an affordable range of high-quality and labor market-relevant vocational training. Technical training courses are initially to be promoted in a total of seven occupational fields and based on German job profiles/standards. In a second, closely linked Phase II, the model will be expanded to include other vocational schools throughout Jordan (see 40425 and 43022).
