Description

Description

Core problem Sorghum, millet and maize are the most important food crops nationwide, and are largely grown by small-scale subsistence farmers. In the program area, the prefecture of Atacora-Donga in the northwest, yams and, to a lesser extent, cassava are also grown. Rice, one of the most important staple foods in Benin, is still largely imported from Asia. Atacora-Donga has numerous valley floors that are flooded when it rains. The utilization of these floodplains contains considerable, as yet untapped potential for rice and vegetable cultivation in Benin. Module objective Increased agricultural production, diversification of the crops grown, improvement of income and the nutritional situation and simultaneous adaptation to climate change. Key outputs Rural land registers have been created and are properly managed and updated; 20 new floodplains have been added to their value and are properly operated and maintained; 15 additional warehouses have been created and are properly used and maintained; connections between production sites and markets have been improved. Target group The target group are the beneficiaries of floodplains and the communities whose services are supported and strengthened. Furthermore, the inhabitants of villages whose property or usage rights are clarified and registered. Contribution to the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda The measures contribute to the implementation of the Agenda goals 1 permanently end poverty in all its forms everywhere, 2 end hunger and create food security and 13 take action to combat climate change.
