Description
Description | The expansion of infrastructure remains one of the central challenges facing the African continent. The investment required for this is immense. According to the African Union, this will amount to 360 billion US dollars by 2040. Africa loses 2 percent of economic growth every year due to a lack of or inadequate infrastructure. This applies to transport infrastructure as well as to energy and water supplies. According to United Nations estimates, goods produced in Africa become up to 40 percent more expensive on the world market. According to the International Energy Agency, only around 32 percent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa has access to electricity. Due to the insufficiently developed African financial markets and the associated limited refinancing options for project developers in the infrastructure sector, locally anchored development banks such as the TDB are particularly important - especially by providing long-term financing. The planned project aims to strengthen Africa's economic and social infrastructure and thus substantially promote Africa's development in the long term by facilitating regional trade, reducing business costs, strengthening the financial sector and expanding social services. The planned FC measure will support the TDB in its key task of contributing to improving employment and income conditions by strengthening regional economic relations between the shareholder states. This also involves a contribution to social development, which is promoted, for example, by building schools and hospitals. |
