Description

Description

The project involves the construction of a new driveway leading into the Rye Nature Center park. The driveway will start from an existing unpaved parking lot off Boston Post Road, about 500 feet south of the current park entrance. The new driveway aims to improve access, resolve vehicle weight restrictions and narrow width issues associated with the historic bridge over Blind Brook, and enhance long-term driveway operations. The new road will be 18 feet wide with 2 feet of unpaved shoulders, allowing an increase in speed limit from 15 to 20 mph. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The project includes removal of 42 protected trees with plans to plant at least 60 new trees and shrubs as replacements. The driveway realignment is partially within a floodplain but designed to avoid direct impacts and maintain flood conveyance. At the end of the driveway, a new 4,500-square-foot Visitor and Education Center with courtyard, garden, and patio is planned, aiming to support full-day programs, add restrooms, community spaces, and manage safe vehicle and pedestrian access.
