Description

Description

Mega port project including the construction of 91 large caissonsThe Tuas Finger One project aims to reclaim 1.8 5 million square meters of land in Tuas, the western part of Singapore. The land to be reclaimed is equivalent to about two-thirds of the size of Yeouido in Korea. The Singapore government will use the new reclamation land as a mega port facility. JTC corporation, the state-owned land developer, awarded the 716-million-dollar reclamation project of the Tuas Finger One in July 2014 to the joint venture consisting of Hyundai E&C, Samsung C&T and Japan’s Penta Ocean. Hyundai E&C holds a 29 percent stake worth 225 million dollars. The Tuas Finger One project is the fourth project for Hyundai E&C to construct caissons in the country since the reclamation project for Pasir Panjang Terminal. Caissons refer to a large concrete structure used for the foundation in underwater work. A caisson, 28 meters long, 40 meters wide and 30 meters high, weighs as much as 18,000 tons. Hyundai E&C aims to build 91 caissons, one of which is the size of a 10-storey apartment building, in 53 months. Combined with 335 caissons built by our company for the previous projects, we have completed the construction of a total of 426 caissons in the city state alone. The total length of 426 caissons reaches 15,310 meters, which is almost two times longer than that of the second player in the market.Working around the clockThe land reclamation project places 1,300 cubic meters of concrete on a daily basis on average and approximately 500,000 cubic meters of concrete on a yearly basis and produces one caisson in four days. If concrete placement is discontinued, this might lead to failures in construction quality caused by joints in the concrete. Therefore, our employees at the construction site are working a double shift around the clock. They should not lose their concentration because a delay in the process might result in disrupting the entire construction schedule. One of difficulties facing the construction site is to manage around 1,300 multinational workers from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Those in charge of safety are training outsourcing workers every morning with documents written in their own languages. To establish safety culture, the Tuas Finger One project adopted both a safety penalty system and a reward system. In addition, Hyundai E&C applied the “curing method for reducing temperature cracks in concrete” developed in cooperation with the Tuas Finger One construction site and our R&D division. This is more meaningful in that this is the first time for a Korean construction company to introduce its own construction technology to overseas projects. The land reclamation project had a potentially high risk of having concrete cracks as concrete is poured into about two meter thick caisson foundation at once. However, the new technology can dramatically reduce cracks, securing high quality and further cutting back on the construction period.Since the Pulau Tekong reclamation project in 1981, Hyundai E&C has successfully reclaimed six percent of the country’s area from the sea with our unrivaled technological capability and competitiveness. Hyundai E&C is expected to retain its reputation in the reclamation and port construction market in Singapore.
