Proposed Rooftop Solar Power Roads on National and State Highways in Bharat

Bharatiya scientists at Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) proposed the construction of rooftop solar panels on roads, particularly on national and state highways. This approach is considered less expensive and more durable than direct solar power roads with panels on the road surface. The rooftop solar power roads also provide shelter to the roads, reducing repair and maintenance costs. The proposal includes potential solar power generation on major highways such as Ahmedabad-Rajkot and Ahmedabad-Vadodara, with an estimated potential of 74,000 MW to 95,000 MW from the existing national highway network.
