Description

Core problem The prevention of the introduction of invasive species is not carried out in accordance with international standards, systematically, effectively and using modern techniques. This means that potentially threatening invasive species continue to be introduced every year. The necessary effective procedures and financial means for controlling and combating newly introduced invasive species are not available, and there is insufficient funding for annually recurring measures; this puts the existence of valuable ecosystems and important endemic species at risk. Module objective The aim of the module is to guarantee the financing of strategies for the prevention, control and eradication of invasive species that threaten the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. Target group Directly Biosafety authorities and national park administrations, which are responsible for the prevention and control of invasive species that threaten biodiversity. Indirectly NGOs that are considered as implementing partners for individual projects to be financed, the population of the Galapagos Islands, who benefit from the preservation of biodiversity as a basis for tourism and economic income. Recipient Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (Ministerio del Ambiente, Agua y Transición Ecológica, MAATE) Project sponsor Ecuadorian Nature Conservation Fund (Fondo de Inversión Ambiental Sostenible, FIAS) Main outputs A Strengthening of the system for preventing the introduction and spread of invasive species from the Ecuadorian mainland and between the Galapagos Islands, B Improvement of the control of priority invasive species, C Modernization of the procedures of FIAS and FEIG and adaptation to international standards. Costs and financing Total costs EUR 21.7 million, FC contribution EUR 15.0 million.
