Description
Description | Opportunity Providence Care operates a long-term care home and provides community-based rehabilitation and mental health services across southeastern Ontario. Providence Care also operates two public hospitals, St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and Mental Health Services, both in Kingston. In order to provide the best care possible in a modern, accessible facility and reduce stigma often associated with mental illness, the decision was made to consolidate hospital services into a new purpose-built facility. Innovations Integrated Team Solutions was required to finance the project until it achieves substantial completion, shifting significant financial risk for late delivery to the builder. If Integrated Team Solutions fails to meet the performance standards set out in the Project Agreement over the life of the contract, it will face financial deductions. Results The new, state-of-the-art 630,000 square-foot hospital will have full range of health services including: 270 beds (120 specialized mental health beds, 100 complex continuing care beds and 50 rehabilitation beds); 100 per cent single patient rooms with adjoining private, accessible three-piece washrooms; Outpatient clinics, a rehabilitation gym and an indoor heated therapy pool accessible to inpatients, outpatients and community groups; and Seamless integration of new technology and security measures. The hospital has been designed with nine inpatient units, each divided into three 10-bed clusters. Each unit will have its own dining, recreation and therapy spaces. The hospital has been designed to maximize natural lighting and views. Each unit will have either ground-level access to the outdoors or a terrace. The facility was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. Green features include: Building materials with recycled content; Reducing indoor water use by 35 per cent using highly efficient plumbing fixtures; and Minimizing solar heat gain by installing reflective roofing. Clients requiring mental health care will access treatment in the same hospital as patients requiring all other type of care, reducing the stigma often associated with mental illness. At all times the hospital remains publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. The public sector retains responsibility for the funding of health services. |
