Description
Description | The Ladakh administration has commissioned India's first geothermal wells by drilling two 1000-meter-deep wells at Puga Valley, situated at an altitude of 14,000 feet. These wells are designed to enable the establishment of a 1 MW pilot geothermal power plant, marking India's first demonstration-scale geothermal power project. The project faced delays due to an expired MoU but resumed after renewal in June 2026. The wells have recorded a maximum temperature of 135 degrees Celsius at 400 meters depth, with further testing ongoing to support commercial geothermal energy exploration. |
