The project aims to increase Bhutan's power capacity by 30% and generate 5,670 million units of electricity annually, some of which will be exported to India. The project cost has escalated from an initial estimate of Nu 35 billion to Nu 100 billion, with India providing 40% as grant and 60% as loan at 10% interest rate. As of February 2026, the project has achieved 93.7% financial progress and 87.75% physical progress. Geological risks remain due to ongoing slope sliding issues. The project is expected to be completed by 2029 or 2030, depending on conditions. |
