The Punjab State Road Sector Project for India aims at increasing the service levels of the state roads through: (a) eliminating the growing bottlenecks in the network; (b) increasing vehicle speeds by providing additional geometric capacity; (c) reducing transport costs by reducing road roughness; (d) reducing accidents; (e) strengthening Government of Punjab capacity to plan and manage the network; and (f) providing adequate road maintenance for network sustainability. The project consists of the following components: 1: The project will fund: (a) civil works along plan roads comprising upgrading, rehabilitation and periodic maintenance of about 1,000 km; (b) technical assistance for the selection, and the design and construction supervision of these works; and (c) land acquisition, the required pre-construction activities, and the implementation of social and environmental safeguards. 2: The Government of Punjab has identified major short comings with respect to organizational aspects, core processes, financial systems and the status of use of Information Technology (IT) systems in the road sector agencies.
