Hyundai E&C positions itself as a leading company in engineering of medical building industryPeople say one third of construction cranes around the world are currently in Qatar. A number of large infrastructure projects are underway in Doha, capital of Qatar. Here, Hyundai E&C is conducting large-scale construction projects such as the Lusail Expressway, the National Museum of Qatar and the New Harbor.Excellent engineering capability reduces construction periodHyundai E&C received the Hamad Medical City project from Public Works Authority in 2011. The construction costs were originally estimated at 534 million dollars but rose to about 900 million dollars due to some design changes. The project solely constructed by Hyundai E&C was a remodeling project designed to turn the athlete’s village and press center of the 2006 Asian Games into medical facilities.Medical building projects generally require builders to offer a higher level of capacity in terms of design, construction and integrated engineering. They should be able to identify the requirements of clients and hospital officials in the design process best suited to distinct characteristics of medical buildings. Hyundai E&C could defeat competitors from the U.S. and Italy by suggesting the Dry Wall construction method to finish the construction about three months earlier than the client suggested.Three buildings including wards for women, ambulatory and rehabilitation are built on the area of 178,000 square meters, much bigger than that of Samsung Medical Center, the largest medical facility in Korea. Combined with the already built medical facilities around the hospital, the total area of the Hamad Medical Center reaches as much as 660,000 square meters. Hyundai E&C utilized high quality finishing materials and hotel-style interiors and installed cutting edge medical equipment. Although the construction was completed in April, our employees at the construction site will be devoted to managing the maintenance and putting the final touch to the hospital until the hospital is open to the public.Expecting zero accidents in all processesAt the peak of the construction, over 4,000 workers were mobilized for the Hamad Medical City project on a daily basis. Along with extreme summer heat above 50 degrees Celsius in the Middle East, a series of sandstorms and high humidity were the biggest barriers preventing the construction. Amid the unfavorable conditions, we have remained true to basic safety guidelines by offering training sessions to multinational workers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and the Philippines every day and conducting site inspections. As a result, Hyundai E&C attained 40-million-man hours of zero accident in August 2015 and are expecting to achieve zero accidents in all construction processes.
