The Water Quality Protection Project aims to further strengthen the capacity of local utilities and reduce pollution from municipal sources into the Neretva and Bosna Rivers. The project consist of the following five components: Component 1) will provide the basis for all further actions for a Wastewater Improvement Plan for reducing river pollution. Component 2) will finance: a first stage of construction for the central town area; some main sewage collectors and upgrade of a sewage treatment plant; the rehabilitation of the Trnovo treatment plant; and some sewer rehabilitation, an outfall pipeline to the Bosna River for treated effluent and a sewage treatment plant. Component 3) a feasibility study will be prepared on low cost natural treatment of wastewater taking into account conditions such as climatic, hydrogeological (sensitive karst area) and land management relevant to the Bosna and Neretva Rivers. Component 4) will include management and monitoring of the project; and training for Utilities and local governments on project implementation. Component 5) will finance financial management training for institutional strengthening and capacity building for the utilities and drafting of annual Business Plans for each Utility.
