Description

Description

Opportunity Service areas along Québec’s highways were aging and not providing adequate amenities for drivers. Issues included insufficient lighting, limited monitoring and rest stops located too far apart, leading to driver fatigue and accidents. Additionally, users of the service areas reported feeling unsafe at some service stations and had stated that they would avoid using them at night if possible.  The province decided to undertake a pilot project to construct seven new 24-hour service areas with gas stations, food services and related services. These service areas will be the first of 33 to be built along Québec’s highways. Innovations The P3 contract bundled seven service stations dispersed across a large geographic area into one Project Agreement. Results The project resulted in service areas in Rigaud, Magog, Rivière-Beaudette Canton-de-Melbourne, Maskinongé, Saint-Jérôme and Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures. Service stations will improve safety by providing motorists with frequent rest stops and cater to drivers’ needs 24-hours a day including food, fuel and information.
