The Quito Power Expansion Project for Ecuador will assist in financing the expansion of the generation, transmission, and distribution facilities of the Empresa Electrica Quito, S.A., an autonomous and publicly owned corporation, which supplies the city of Quito with electricity. Quito, the capital and second largest city of Ecuador, is an important center of commerce and industry in the Ecuadorian economy. The demand for power has increased greatly from the commercial, industrial, and residential sectors of Quito. As a result, the power supply must be expanded to meet the growing demand. The project will increase the capacity of the current power system to 18,980 kilowatts by: 1) constructing a 3,000 kilowatt diesel plant; 2) constructing a 14,480 kilowatt hydro plant; 3) transferring 1,500 kilowatts from the nearby town of Machachi over a 22 kv transmission line; and 4) strengthening and expanding its distribution system. These improvements will increase the power supply in order to meet growing consumer needs.
