Description | The Railroad Project for Korea will expand the railroad's capacity and its network to meet growing traffic needs, improve operating efficiency, and decrease operating costs. Since the Korean War, the government has been unable to increase its capacity sufficiently to keep pace with the growth in passenger and freight traffic. As a result, there have been delays in transportation, uneconomic management of freight, and inconvenience for passengers in overcrowded trains. The Railroad Project will alleviate these problems. Its components are: 1) construction of new and improved lines; 2) procurement of locomotives and railcars; 3) procurement of rolling stock; and 4) construction of new facilities. These improvements will modernize Korea's railroads in order to meet future demands on the railway system. |
