The Second Railway Project for Thailand will rehabilitate and improve the railway system through the rehabilitation of railway shops and the procurement of signaling equipment. The railway system is the backbone of Thailand's transportation system. It provides the only important link between all regions of the country. Bangkok, the hub of the railway system, is also the nation's only important seaport. As a result, the railway system plays a vital role in providing inland transportation and foreign trade. The system must be updated and improved in order to further the economic development of Thailand. The Second Railway Project will accomplish this goal by: 1) relaying the rails; 2) procuring locomotives, freight cars, and coaches; 3) renovating the telecommunication system, 4) installing automatic couplers and certain items of general improvements; and 5) improving operations. These measures will upgrade the railway system and increase the economic development of Thailand.
