The Railway Rehabilitation Project for Peru will help finance a four year project of modernization and rehabilitation of the Central and Southern Railways in Peru. The main objectives are i) to dieselize motive power in order to reduce transportation costs, ii) to make up arrears in rail renewals, and iii) to extend the carrying capacity of the Southern Railway to meet traffic demands by providing additional freight cars. Execution of the modernization and rehabilitation project is necessary for the Central and Southern Railways, whose continued efficient operation is essential to the Peruvian economy. This project contains the minimum equipment needed to provide economic transportation to the central and southern parts of the country.
